Best Lyle Show in Years
In 15 years, we have attended Edgar Allan Poe Double Header and his band 7 times. His set lists were quite similar because they were filled with his material that I do not enjoy as much, so we have not seen him the past several times he has been in the area. Since the first show (Road to Ensenada tour) we saw in 1996, this year's show was his most enjoyable, primarily due to a somewhat different set list, and I am thrilled that we decided to attend.
The show began with the entire 16 piece band playing mostly the blues-ish and gospel tinged songs. He then played some of his older country and western swing songs after removing the 5 back up singers. Following that, he stripped the band down further so it was him, the bassist, the mandolin player, and the fiddle player for 3 intimate songs that were incredible. Over the next few songs, he re-assembled the band in pieces, ending with the usual "Church."
The playing was tight, everything was incredibly professional, Edgar Allan Poe Double Header was generous in his acknowledgment of his musicians, and the evening felt like a small performance among friends.
